Swim competition

This morning I got into the pool at the earliest time yet: 6:10.

The pool is an "enclosed outdoor pool", meaning a light framed enclosure keeps the elements out, but there is no insulation, heating, or cooling of the space. Windows all around and corrugated acrylic on top.

This morning I saw that there were dim lights coming from that corrugated ceiling, barely lighting the space, which was wonderfully dark. Not black but comfortably, secretly dark. This was the first time I'd seen that, and it was a delightful surprise. The under-water lights were on as well, even more wonderful.

The pool remained full the entire time I was there. I swam between a regular, who takes the last lane (always gets there ahead of me) and swims at least an hour and a half (I am wondering if maybe it is actually 2 hours), and the Butterfly Man. He doesn't swim only butterfly, but he's the only swimmer I have seen in this pool who does that stroke. It looked to me like he was actually doing "Individual Medleys", or IMs,as the cognescenti call them.He rested after each one, then took off again like a maniac, all flash and splash. I have seen him there in the early mornings lately, and wonder if he is new to the pool or if I have just begun to see him there. He doesn't swim nearly as long as the two women I usually see there. I suspect that he puts a great deal of energy into each of his efforts, and it drains him.

Lately I have been doing my swim in 40 minutes. This means that over time,  since I first reached 20 laps, I have reduced my time about ten minutes. That's actually pretty good. I mean,  for me. The time includes my three short breaks, so I am doing my laps in a tiny bit less than 2 minutes each.

On my way to the gym I saw things I wanted to photograph in that very early light, but I didn't want to stop. Had to get into the pool, get it done. Funny.
