Today, though. no. I got in when there were three empty lanes. I chose the farthest one, my fave. After I had swum five laps I stopped for a brief break. As I stood up in the water I watched the other two swimmers leave the pool. I had it all to myself. I hoped it would stay that way for a while.
It did. I put in another five laps, popped up to emptiness, then another five, still empty, and finally after three more laps two people entered the pool. So I had it to myself for thirteen laps! My previous record was five.
Every time I get the pool to myself I think of a horror movie I saw a while back. I am not a horror fan so I don't remember the name of it. There was evil going on in a large mansion where several people lived. One person who lived there was a young woman who liked to swim in the large, deep, indoor pool. One day she was swimming under water and when she rose up to get some air the top of the pool had turned to glass. She drowned, needless to say, and when the others found her there was no glass. Just a dead woman.
I see the pool this way, as potentially becoming glass at any time. I am not seriously afraid of it but the thought is always there, competing with my utter enjoyment of my aloneness. Not even really competing. Just, perhaps, adding some spice to it.
