Dec. 20th, 2005

Elsa just came by and gave me a bottle of Purell hand sanitizer and Lysol sanitizing wipes. She said Randy was sick of the sickness that keeps going around here! Funny Christmas present!!

I always see the 'overuse' of these products as just one more way we are breeding better germs. I have two friends who work in microbiology and both see these products as a major threat to human health. They recommend soap and water and hand washing for good health.

Re: interesting...
I totally agree with you and I said something similar to Elsa.

I come from a fairly dirty family and I keep a...well...not pristine house, and I have developed a lot of resistance!

I also remember a presentation on AIDS that employees had to take at a former job a few years ago. The nurse pointed out that soap is plenty. And even water alone does a lot to get rid of bacteria, at least some types.

But many people in this society never question advertising. Every time I hear that commercial that says something like "everyone needs lysol" I want to barf and yell at the television.

Re: clean enough
I do agree that people are too carried away with the "antibacterial" selling point in hand soaps. It can definitely reduce the presence of "helpful" agents that actually would help build resistance. I do, however, wash my hands frequently, and have a travel-sized bottle of waterless hand sanitizer at my desk, since I sometimes sneeze or cough, and even with tissues, I'm hung up on germs on my keyboard, desk phone, etc.

And forget about doorknobs!

As sloppy as my home is, I'm happy when I have Lysol cleaning products (just can't hack Clorox, though other people love it).

Re: clean enough
I'm sure I'll use these things on occasion because, like you, I am not right near water most of the time. I'm smart enough to use them when it matters. When I have a cold. When others have a cold. When we touch, which isn't often.

Re: clean enough
I'm so like you that way, it's not even funny!

Even though I have sort of a "touch me not" policy, I still manage to have bleary-watery eyes all the time, and I'm usually bitching (here, on LJ, my "happy place" for that sort of thing) about being all congested or having some cold or something.

All I can do is take responsibility for making sure I'm not spreading germs, but, unfortunately, I can give no guarantee for anyone else around here.

Have a suspicion that I may have contracted this from my neighbor, who is a real loving, "people-person".

That's a great Christmas present! I sure hope it's not the only one, but even so, it was thoughtful.

(Since the sniffling has come back, with renewed force, I guess I'm partial to that sort of thing @ work!) :D
