Last night I was thinking about being community development director instead of a highly peon. I imagined how I would operate in that position. I believe that I would do well at it and occasionally my approach would hit against brick walls at the council level, but most of the time I believe it would be respected. I seriously thought about pursuing such a position. But then I thought about the other costs involved: attending all council meetings, doing dinners, lunches, working deals. I also don't have much knowledge about certain types of programs or processes and would not be good at advocating one against another. Yes, this knowledge could be gained. But overall I don't much like the idea of having to be around city hall for so many hours and having a position or too much visibility.
