I am overhearing another planner talk on the telephone. He keeps repeating "in this case", at least once per sentence. I don't think he hears it. He used to say "basically" the same way, every other word.

As I was listening in on another conversation earlier, one in which another planner was trying to explain to a woman that yes, she had gotten a demolition permit from the building division but that it had been a mistake, that she should have gotten planning approval first, I thought about our cross to bear. This woman was likely thinking, "These planners must be born this way. They must have their paperwork."

No, we aren't. We don't do this just because we love paper. One of the uphill battles we wage every day is fought in explanations to disbelieving people, explanations they often do not want to hear or are just incapable of hearing or understanding.

I have at times wanted passionately to explain until the end of time, in hopes that my message would be heard. But some things just aren't going to be. Some people are never going to understand what I do or why or what possible justification there is for it.
