I took my cup of decaf to a comfortable seat in Starbucks, near a few tables. A woman at the nearest table turned to me and said something about being rude, having her back to me. I laughed, said I always take the seat where there is nobody behind me, and she started asking me questions, getting a conversation going. I fell for it completely, told her briefly about what I do, how long I've lived here, where I went to school, how the air in LA is cleaner now than it was when I lived there...and then she asked, "Do you believe in God?" and I knew I was for it.

She invited me to her church, said things about "knowing him", clasped my hands and spoke warmly to me, asked if I were interested in "making money", too. I said I wasn't. By then I had a little sense. But I didn't get off scot-free. I gave her my business card, didn't give her a personal card or a master chorale card, and took her business card and church invitation card. Then, on my way to my car, I thought, "Maybe I will need to avoid this Starbucks for a little while..." Shit.
