why I love Pismo Beach

When I worked for the city of San Luis Obispo, every change came only after months or years of deliberation, review by specialized committees, and discussion of extensive alternatives. So, for example, when the telephone system changed, a lot of options were considered by a lot of people, various systems were analyzed, other companies using the systems were interviewed, so there would be no surprises. And generally, there were no surprises.

In Pismo Beach things don't work that way. We heard various rumors about our getting a new phone system but had no opportunity to offer our own suggestions or describe what we needed. Last week we got an email from the acting city clerk, saying we'd be switching over to a new system today.

And all hell is breaking loose. We are recording our names and messages on the new system but when someone calls the phone just rings. No message. When I called a fellow planner, the voice message for someone else played. Of course nobody gets to leave a message.

We've had this horrible reputation for being really tough to reach, and now that rep is just going to expand.
