I took the boy to a show at the Performing Arts Center tonight at six. I liked having the opportunity to bring him there for a laid-back, children-welcome, audience participitation show. The show was "Franklin and Friends" and was a singing, dancing play starring a turtle, fox, bear, snail, fox, and three overactive "supervisors". There was a good-sized crowd, maybe two-thirds of the center.

I felt a little irritated at the cost of the tickets - $31 for the two of us - and having to pay the usual $4 for parking (when alone I park on the street but that was too far for the little guy to walk) - and then the cost of the goodies the troupe brought with them to sell. They had "wands", for example, light sticks with blinking lights that turn off and on and with hearts on the end of them - for $10 each. A little blinking light pin was $5. I don't even want to know how much they were getting for the Franklin videos. I didn't see any Franklin books, oddly. I really would have bought Joey a wand, knowing how much he loves making believe, but I couldn't' take that price. I did stand in line to get him a little bag of circus cookies and me a cup of hot choc, and this one time the center let us take our food inside. Everything more relaxed. At the end of the show he still had hopes that I'd get him a wand and when I told him again that ten dollars was too much, he got mad at me. He took off running. He ran around a little grass area and then I got hold of him again and we made it to the car. I carried him most of the way. He's really amenable, overall, not that difficult to work with. He hasn't learned yet that he can't have everything he wants but I think he's starting to get it.
