I found a parking space in the city lot next to the beach. I limped to the beach and walked for about forty minutes along the shore, letting the surf rush over my bare feet and part of my jeans, listening to the sound of the waves and the laughter of people.

In personal ads people often say they like "walks on the beach". I read it so often I instantly pass on any ad that includes that statement. I do like walking on the beach, but who doesn't? I think the soothing sound of the sea, the feel of the sand between my toes, the wind blowing my hair, all create a very here-and-now experience that is comforting and peaceful.

In today's case, though, my knee would not stop hurting. It did get to a point where I could walk without thinking of it constantly but it was there like an ocean of its own, impossible to ignore.

After I got off the beach I headed for a coffee place up the street and got a latte. Took it with me as I made my way around the block and back to my car.

I don't know if the walk did my knee any good. It doesn't seem so. But it was a kind of minimum exercise, less intense than I normally like, but a minimum I can live with. If I have to suffer with this knee over the weekend there won't be any climbing hikes on the schedule.
