dance tonight

I need to be out of these orthotics for a while so I can wear them tonight for dance. I am beginning to be bothered right now - although that could just be my right leg being troublesome. So out they come.

I still feel headachey. I took some acetominophen earlier and it had no effect. Which is usually the case.

My husband's been wearing orthotics for maybe a year when he plays tennis. He's had a lot of problems with what they are calling sciatica (but we have our doubts) and now it turns out the orthotics may have been exacerbating the problems (in addition to ankle braces he'd wear under his socks). I know a lot of people swear by them but . . . I'd be careful.

Certainly they don't work for everyone for every case. I had others years ago that helped a lot, and the simple arch supports (Birkenstock)more recently also helped, so I figure I will gain from their use. But my podiatrist says if I happen to be one of those who does not benefit he will buy them back from me. I was impressed by that.

You said your husband wears them "when he's playing tennis". Could this be the problem really? I don't know the particular case, of course, but I know in my case working up to wearing them fulltime is the goal, and they actually make changes in your body over time. In his case it may be that these are the wrong changes. Or it may be that he should be working up to wearing them more often.

My podiatrist was good with the orthotics but he recommended an exercise that was bad for my knees. jWhen I told my chiropractor about it she said she never recommends the leg extension types of exercises for those with knee problems. Too much of a load. THat exercise set me back.

So that we really know where we are, I hope, I am seeing an orthopedist today. I need a full diagnosis and some kind of treatment plan. My knee damage stems mainly from over-pronation (hereditary tendency) but there are other issues besides the shifted knee caps.

I get so tense going to a new doctor and starting all over. I feel frustrated often when I try to get answers, when I try to tell the full story. Nobody usually wants to hear it. Too much of a hurry. But I have to try.

Rick is going through very similar frustrations and I really feel for him. It's hard because there's not a whole lot I can do except be sympathetic and keep the house warm in the morning. His is also a long saga and I don't know how many doctors he's been to in the last year and he has to be so proactive and stay after them. Finally one of his tennis students who's a doctor said she wanted to help him and luckily she was on our HMO so he switched over and now he seems to be getting somewhere. It may turn out that the leg problem is simply the result of these ankle braces he'd been wearing. But there are other chronic problems and that's only part of it.
