I'm listening to my latest buy - the set of Glenn Gould's recordings of the Goldberg Variations, both his 1955 and his 1981 recordings - and being transported. Gould said (quotation in the beautifully-packaged set),

The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but rather the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.

That really does say it.
