I cleverly made changes in my startup files yesterday and screwed up my computer system. I have gotten online with my laptop, gone to PC Mechanic, and gotten advice. I discovered a Win 98 startup disk in my files, used that to get to help, followed the help to get to safe mode, restarted, and now it may actually be getting there but I am not sure yet. It hasn't completed the scan for errors yet.

One strangely comforting thing about my computer problem is that in searching for answers on PC Mechanic and in Tech Support Guy forums, I find other people with even worse problems. Not only does misery love company, but misery loves company that's more miserable.

Of course I am a bit frustrated with not having my main computer working. But there are always rewards of some sort, or compensations, I think. I am working my way through this morass not feeling entirely alone, because these tech guys are coming up with ideas and responses that are getting me closer to a solution, and I am starting to feel like I'm getting to know them, in a way.

While it would be great if I could pick up the phone and find the right person who could lead me through every step I need to take - and that person may well be there, be out there, but I'd have to pay, that's for sure - I think I am actually learning more this way, suffering in public. Sort of public. semi public.

My laptop makes it possible. I can bitch about this laptop, its age, its speed, blah blah, but it has never let me down.
