Signs of the times

Yesterday I went to Linens 'n Things and bought several kitchen items at 40% off or more. Today I went to Mervyn's and got some kitchen towels, picture frames, and a couple of dolls to put into toy collection boxes, all at at least 50% off. I am picking at the bones of businesses that are in their death throes.

Mary called just now. Her unemployment was disqualified because she's going to school and because the employment office assumed she got severance pay. She goes to school once a week, at night. She did not get severance. They didn't bother to check. She can't reach them by phone or fax because the lines are always busy. It's a nightmare for her - and for thousands of others, obviously.
