The G Word

Planet Green has a show called The G Word. It's a news magazine type show, with cute perky hosts and a variety of investigators, all of whom go for the funny. Even when they don't have it in them naturally. There isn't anything new about that. Everyone does it in the home makeover shows, for example.

The show simply never gets really serious. It tells us the facts - how many hangers go into landfills each year - then offers a solution that doesn't usually go far enough. In the case of the hangers they mention that new hangers are being made out of biodegradable materials. That isn't nearly far enough.

I know that many - perhaps most - Americans are more than reluctant to face the real facts. Until they are hit in the face with a really obvious problem they don't do shit about global warming, waste, energy conservation. So a show that gets really serious would get really no watchers. So I try to accept this approach. I just wonder how long it will take before we get a show on this channel that speaks to those of us who are actually serious.
