Staff meetings at Starbucks

I am sitting in a Starbucks downtown, sucking up the Internet access that came with Joey's computer (for those of you who do not know, the amazing xo computer, the one laptop per child computer, that I got for Joey came with a full year's subscription to T-Mobile hotspots, compliments of T-mobile. This value is greater than what I spent on the computer(s)). I for one am taking advantage.

Unfortunately, at the table next to me appears to be a staff meeting, apparently of Starbucks staff. They do this often at Starbucks and other similar types of businesses - take customer space for their marketing and hiring and general staff discussions. I am sure it makes sense in a way but it is usually obvious what it is, and in this particular case it is irritating. It seems to be a bit of a bitch session, with one woman in particular laying out how hard she tries to do the right thing and how this or that person doesn't get it and she apologizes for walking into that meeting the way she did, that isn't her style, and on and on.

I'm going on record that I find these really annoying. I don't know what a reasonable solution is. It's unreasonable to expect them to build a separate room for these things. What then? Keep it shorter? Separate the table somehow? Something. To me it is unprofessional.

My brother got one of those XO's so he could donate and so he could understand it in case he ever got a call. He had it at home and had played with it some. I played with it some. His stepson played with it some. NONE of us could get it to connect to his wireless network and only his stepson could figure out most of the rest of what it can do. (Personally? I would have NEVER even gotten the thing open if it weren't your YOUR video!!)

The T-Mobile hot spot subscription... you using it on the XO? Or is it transferable? I don't think my brother even knows he has that. But then I don't think there are any hot spots in the middle of nowhere where he is.

I felt that the getting online thing was the most important initially, which is why I showed how to get there in my video number 1. I was able to get online with Joey's. I don't know what the problem was in your case, but I understand some kinds of connections cause more trouble than others. Your experience does suggest that the computer really is designed for children.

Of course the little guy (the xo) doesn't come with much in the way of instructions, but the website has quite a lot and has links to other sites where people are hard at work telling people the tricks. Joey really likes his and has been drawing and making music and taking pictures and videos with it. I don't know what else he has gotten into so far.

I wish I had one at home. I would really love to explore it more and do more (better, one might hope) videos on it. What I would really love, though, is to do the videos with Joey using it and showing how.

Oh, the T-mobile deal. You have to be alert for these things. I hope your bro did not throw away the box. You need a number, a packing number, to get the subscription to T-mobile. There is an explanation of how to do it on the laptopgiving.org website. The only reason I got it going quickly is that I have been reading that site for a while now and knew about it.And yes, more than one person can use it - just obviously not at the same time. Doesn't matter what computer you use - you just need the correct login info.

I did NOT realize your video included internet instructions! I did not watch it all the way through but did see how to get the thing open and that was the tricky part that I could do since you showed me how. I'm going to have to send a note to my brother with the link to your video AND the hot spot news. Thanks!

I hope you send him this link:

I edited the original some more, making it a bit shorter (and not quite so boring) and I deleted the other one.
