Letter from Lois Capps

My rep in the House of Representatives is Lois Capps. I wrote to her recently about getting out of Iraq. I'm so done with the screwing around. Here is her reply.

Dear Ms. Lautner:

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the war in Iraq . I appreciate hearing from you regarding such an important issue.

I want to be clear that I have opposed the Iraq war from the beginning. One of my proudest moments in Congress was voting against the war in October 2002. Since then, I have been an outspoken critic of this war and the Administration's complete mismanagement of it. You will be pleased to know I am a member of the Out of Iraq Caucus and oppose any plans to build permanent military bases in Iraq .

As you know, the Democratically-controlled Congress has hit many Republican roadblocks while trying to end this war. In March, for the first time, the House and Senate passed a spending bill (H.R. 1591) that provided a clear timetable to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home. Unfortunately, this bill was vetoed by President Bush. The House and Senate then passed a second supplemental bill (H.R. 2206) that was signed into law by the President on May 25, 2007. I did not vote for H.R. 2206 because it did not include an enforceable timetable to get our troops out of Iraq .

In May, I supported Rep. Jim McGovern's bill to provide for the redeployment of United States Armed Forces and defense contractors from Iraq (H.R. 2237). This bill would have completed redeployment no later than 180 days after its passage. Unfortunately, H.R. 2237 failed in the House by a vote of 171-255. More recently, I supported Rep. Ike Skelton's bill, the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act (H.R. 2956), which directs the Secretary of Defense to reduce the number of Armed Forces in Iraq no later than 120 days after passage, with a complete redeployment from Iraq by April 1, 2008. Fortunately, this bill passed the House by a vote of 223-201 and is now awaiting Senate action.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please rest assured that ending the war in Iraq is of paramount importance to me. I believe the best way to support our troops is to bring them home.

Sincerely,

LOIS CAPPS

Member of Congress
