OtRwC Day 14, Part 1: getting to Kanab

Elaine and I left Las Vegas for Kanab yesterday, complete with cat, three bags of groceries, our suitcases, cameras, and notebook computers. The trip was through the beautiful Arizona and Utah desert. The little city of St. George, Utah, is experiencing a growth spurt:

Housing and shopping developments are taking over the rich red earth and are popping up on top of those amazing castle-like hills:

Fortunately, there is much beautiful protected land left, and unfortunately much that is vulnerable. The drive was beautiful, the cat was unhappy, spending much time meowing and expressing his distaste for the trip through his bodily functions.

We finally reached the little town of Kanab at about 2:30 in the afternoon, Mountain time. The town is inviting, containing many older buildings that have new uses. We noticed an older theater that offers live plays, a theater that shows classic films, and a theater that features the newer films - but only Wednesdays through Saturdays, once at 8 p.m. There are several animal - oriented businesses and just about every motel has free wireless. We both decided we'd spend a little time in this town in our free time.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is five miles from Kanab, in a place called Angel Canyon. This sanctuary is extraordinary. It is that rare rare organization: a nonprofit with leaders who think things through, and do so beautifully. In my next post I'll describe a little of what makes it special.
