I went to an informal memorial gathering for my friend Steve yesterday, in Desert Hot Springs. About 75 people showed up, and I know they represent literally hundreds who cared about Steve. Several of them spoke. A common thread emerged: They met Steve through someone else or they just showed up at the Beat Hotel, and they bonded immediately and spent several hours with Steve, talking, seeing the Burroughs materials, visiting the Lautner motel, driving around Desert Hot Springs with Steve as the tour guide (in at least one case in the middle of the night). Those who were lucky enough to see Steve more than once saw him as a close friend, a mentor, a visionary, a generous and passionate person, and more.

What seemed funny is that we each thought we owned Steve. The stories overlapped and the subjects of the discussions changed in some ways, but everyone felt some special ownership, and I know I wasn't the only one jealous of mine.

The day was beautiful and the location perfect. I might include a couple of photographs in future posts. I am glad I went.
