Fun with mentos

Among the highlights of our trip to Desert Hot Springs were our attempts to create mentos explosions. I had done a few relatively well at home so I could get the idea and would  bring the right equipment. I brought eight 2-liter bottles of diet soda - different types, plus several packets of mentos and construction paper.

This particular sequence was not the highest. It was the first one that Mary did, after I sent two bottles of soda into the heavens that Mary was unsuccessful in recording on video (on my little digital camera). She herself referred to the videos as resembling the Blair Witch Project. I knew somehow that Mary would be especially good at inserting the mentos into the bottle all at once and I was right. So I readied my better camera to capture it rapidfire:

How do you do that?!

So glad you asked!

Open a package of mentos. Tear off a piece of paper a little longer than the mentos and a couple inches wide. I found that construction paper works very well. Place the mentos on the paper in a single line and curve the paper so that it fits within the bottle opening. So you have a line of mentos in a curved "chute".

Open a two-liter bottle of diet soda. In our experiments the diet tonic water worked best but there are other factors involved so it may not matter. But it should be diet.

Pour the mentos into the bottle ALL AT ONCE. That's the trick. And get out of the way.

One of the other ways of getting them in right away is to place a card over the top of the opened bottle, then lining up the chute on top of the card so the mentos are ready to go straight down, and pulling the card out quickly.

I found the instructions on Wiki-How, by the way. There are a couple of pages explaining it.

I was talking on my cell phone to my daughter when I first tried it. I screamed when it went up! it was so funny. And fun. She said "You're really just a 12-year-old boy". I guess so.

I posted a video of this on youtube and discovered that there are lots of others...ah well, each is unique, I say.

And it's looking good for the beads!

Those pics are great.

But all I can think about are yellow jackets swarming in for all that sticky mess!

I saw no yellow jackets in the desert. And it was diet soda. I think they know the difference. Clever little guys that they are.
