Wondering

First, do sociopaths love music? Can they? Can it touch them?

Second, if we didn't have religions what would our excuse be for such monumental works as Bach's b-minor mass?

I actually think about these things.

My answers to your questions....
1. I think music can be loved by anyone and touch anyone, even if just in some small way.

2. Nature...the beauty can be overwhelming, the power extraordinary.
And don't forget love. Not a bad excuse.

re: sociopaths

iirc, i believe hitler was very fond of music and was touched to tears by it, go figure.

silence of the lambs i *think* was based on a true sociopath. in the movie, anthony hopkins seemed to enjoy classical music with his murders - and 'meals.' o_O

i don't have an answer for #2. i think it's a great question.

What makes me think about no. 1 in particular is that true sociopaths (psychopaths) develop no real attachments. They are essentially without most emotions, feeling only anger, indignation, things associated with themselves.

It's possible that Hitler was a monstrous narcisscist but not a true psychopath.

It seems that a real sociopath would not be able to enjoy music in the ordinary sense of "enjoy", being able to connect with it, feel emotions.

I'm reading yet another book on these persons - maybe the answer is in there!

About the second:I do believe we would still have beautiful music - but who would be paying for it? A lot of the "masters" worked for churches. What goes through my head is the worshiping of this other-worldly creature - it's hard to imagine Bach writing exquisite musical odes to...say...his wife. As if she were beyond human.

Of course a lot of the music I love does not have a "program" - doesn't "represent" anything. But the particular pieces our chorale sings most often are deeply religious.
