swim turns

Today I did more flip turns. Not many of them were close to good, yet I feel I am getting closer to getting the hang of them. I think  the way to focus on them is to back off a bit in the pool and take a run at one, stop, back off a little more and go at it again, until I'm far enough back to be really swimming into the turn. I find that I do better when I start close to the end of the lane, swim maybe one stroke, then turn.

Although I think the best way to learn is to keep at it over and over I prefer to go at it incrementally, gradually increasing the number of turns I do in a single swim session. This gives me little goals to meet as I go along,  and that keeps the workout interesting.

I was a competitive long-distance swimmer in college. I practiced the flip turns but for some reason had a problem with my equlibrium and would become confused and dizzy as I came out of the flip to push off. I sometimes even flipped into the wall. My coach decided since I was so strong over the long haul I could opt to touch, turn and push without the flip. I became as efficient at that sort of turn as the speed swimmers were at the flips. I envy you learning to do the flip turns! Ya know, if we lived near each other we would do so many things together, like swimming. I miss my lunch-break swim sessions at the Horse Park.

I have not had an especially easy time of it, and my touch-and-turn method is as fast as any flip turn I've done. I'm doing it more for the learning, obviously.

But yesterday I may have done something else that I didn't realize at the time. My left knee hurst like hell today and did all night, and it is highly inflamed. I wish I knew what I did so I could avoid it!

If we were closer I could learn some things from you! Suck you dry of your swimming knowledge! I am so slow and I know there are some things I can improve but I don't quite know how to go about them.
