Planning

I am overhearing another planner talk on the telephone. He keeps repeating "in this case", at least once per sentence. I don't think he hears it. He used to say "basically" the same way, every other word.

As I was listening in on another conversation earlier, one in which another planner was trying to explain to a woman that yes, she had gotten a demolition permit from the building division but that it had been a mistake, that she should have gotten planning approval first, I thought about our cross to bear. This woman was likely thinking, "These planners must be born this way. They must have their paperwork."

No, we aren't. We don't do this just because we love paper. One of the uphill battles we wage every day is fought in explanations to disbelieving people, explanations they often do not want to hear or are just incapable of hearing or understanding.

I have at times wanted passionately to explain until the end of time, in hopes that my message would be heard. But some things just aren't going to be. Some people are never going to understand what I do or why or what possible justification there is for it.

Well, basically, I'd agree with you, and in this case, the person who keeps saying this is basically a person with a basically loud voice, so it's hard, basically, not to hear him, in this case, basically all the time.

The planning manager, who was at a planning commission meeting with this planner the other night, kept count of the number of times he said "in this case", and it was several dozen times.

I am sure he doesn't hear it at all. Never hears himself, has no idea, probably never will.
