waking up

I woke up to a virus trying to get in through an email. Norton stopped it and quarantined it, but then the next time I tried to download the mail it was still there. This happened again and again so I could not get the mail through ordinary means. I updated all components of my Internet Security program, just to be safe, then restarted the computer, logged on through another provider, and went into the web-based email. From there I was able to delete the sucker for once and for all. No harm done, from what I can see, but I should run a virus scan later today just to be sure nothing got in.

It's certainly worth it to me to pay for the update service. I think I get email viruses a couple of times a week. It's likely I would not be opening them anyway, but it only takes one innocent little attachment.

The same thing happened to my mother. At least you're savvy enough to figure out how to remedy it!

Well, the virus didn't get in. The virus software caught it. It was just annoying that I kept downloading the email message that had the attachment. So my computer didn't actually get infected. In fact, I ran a full scan - arrrgh - almost two hours! - this evening and there was nothing to be found. I just wanted to be sure.

These days email-sent viruses are far more common than they were even a couple of years ago. It's sad that we all have to have that software now or else. Mine slows the downloads and the sent mail as well - it checks mail I send, too, which is good. An irritating part of today's computer world...

I hope your mom's computer is okay now!!

I did a virus scan on my mac the other day. I got an email that said I had forwarded a virus and I just wanted to make absolutely sure that wasn't true. I hadn't emailed the person for one thing. I don't have Windows either. Macs don't tend to get viruses. It's not as much fun for the little jerks who create them.

My mother is having someone come by her apartment tomorrow to fix her computer. I'm so glad she could find someone to do that. She's such a frail lady these days.
