play

I saw a play tonight. Buried Child, by Sam Shepard. Like most good plays, it made me think. I am really glad I went. Some remarkable performances by such young people.

What a delightful surprise! The audience was small and I was really disappointed in that. And I was thinking about how many people I know who never go to plays, may never have seen one in their lives, in fact. It's a discouraging thing, because plays are, as you obviously know, not the same as movies! I have been composing a letter for the local paper on this subject, to urge people to give a few hours of time and not much money to find out what it's like to be in the same room with the actors for a live performance.

I will certainly dig out those books. I read voraciously, am sure I will like them.

I couldn't agree more. I see live performances of all kinds (almost). Dance, music, plays, individual performers. I think it's easier when one lives in a smaller city that still has the resources, like San Luis Obispo, where I live. It's a college town and also the government center, and has a fairly alert citizenry.

How cool that you feel so passionately about Shepard's works. I feel that way about various writers, composers, others. Good writing really can change your life. I look forward to your email.
