dance dance dance

I got my ballroom dance videos today. Two videos, many variations of cha cha, rhumba, and waltz. I'm going to check the first one out before dance class tonight. Although what we're doing is the fox trot.

I am SO jealous! I used to take country line dancing. I even took my mother to the classes. She was so cute at 70-ish. I couldn't possibly do those now, unfortunately. I even took a belly dancing class once. I had forgotten about that.

I do know I am lucky. I can, in spite of stiff knees, do these dances. And we are particularly lucky that this good dance team is willing to teach classes through the Pismo recreation department. So the price is very reasonable. I don't think such classes are all that available in most cities, although of course some clubs offer tips on swing and sometimes have lessons before a dance. But that's pretty limited.

I first started the classes at the end of last November. I had never danced before, so everything was new. I am starting to get more of a feel of it now, learning how to stand, how to follow, how to hold my arm (with "tone" but not too much...), learning how to bend my knees some ( this is harder for me). And all the variations! It's overwhelming!

I have never done country line dancing, although I took a one-time class in western line dancing with my kids once a while back. They are much quicker at picking up steps than I am, so I was going the wrong direction most of the time and they were right there doign it all. At the time I was heavier and it was pretty exhausting for me, too.

This ballroom stuff can be wonderful.

My daughter took a Hip Hop class in her senior year of college (this past semester actually). I know. I know. We paid for it. Anyway, she's an excellent dancer and I haven't had a chance to see her moves yet. I am looking forward to that!

Your classes sound great. I think ballroom dancing is wonderful too. It gives you a chance to hold people (well... sort of) in a way that very few other types of dancing afford.

What took a little while for me to realize is that ballroom dance is not mainly for observers, like many other dances are. It is an opportunity for anyone, talented or not, to move around the floor reasonably gracefully, and to talk! I can't think of a neater way to have a conversation. Getting into trickier moves is just icing on that cake. So yes, the touching is different. The whole meaning of the dance is different.

It is interesting to me, too, that I can dance with all kinds of men and I don't feel like I am giving them something by touching them as required, because the touch is a part of the dance. And yet i am certain that some nice fundamental things are going on underneath. Not that I am becoming attached to any specific man, but that we give each other something nice that we take home with us.

Some dances are clearly more intimate than others. The tango, the waltz, for example. Oh so close, and you have to know where to put your feet and your legs slide against your partner's...woooo. Neato.

My favorite dance partner of all time is my sister. We have our "American Bandstand" style together and, even though neither of us dances that way anymore, we still do it for my mother from time to time. She gets a kick out of it. (I lead.)

I went to the Crow's Nest (a local restaurant with a great bar) a couple of years ago before my last knee surgery. I went on a "girls' night out" sort of excursion with my son's ex-girlfriend. I started dancing with this great young black guy. He was amazing. Very few men dance like I do. If you see me dancing with a guy, we're probably not touching at all and we look like we've never danced together before. But this guy was different. He mirrored me completely. I had such a great time. We even had a lot of people watching us. There is nothing that beats good dance synergy! Hell, he was even touching me in ways I normally wouldn't allow; but it was so dead on target to the space we were in. And then we just thanked each other and walked away. God I miss dancing! Bring on the knee surgery! :-)
