Back in Action...so to speak

Mary and Joey left this morning. They were here since last Tuesday, and we had a good time together. I did get a little off-schedule, if one could call my daily activities anything like a schedule. One thing was journal-writing, anyway, and I'm back at that.

The day before yesterday Mary and Joey and I went to a concrete block place to buy materials for my front walkway. We planned to install paving stones. We talked to the guy at the counter - Shaun. He told us what has to be done and what equipment we would need and suddenly my 20-square-foot project was looking a little bigger. I asked him if he knew people who could do this and he did. He wrote a name and number on a piece of paper, then said, a little shyly, "that's me, actually". We arranged to have him stop by to look at the walk area and I paid for the materials.

Yesterday Paul and I went there to pick up the materials. Shaun came over after his work yesterday to start the job. He got digging and found tree roots. From the tree that had been ground down when my house was installed. He worked it for a couple of hours, then went home. Early this morning he showed up with a friend and they have been at it since. I think I got the better deal. He didn't figure the various things that could go wrong on a little job like this, is what I'm thinking, certainly didn't think monster tree roots along with heavy clay. But a deal's a deal, I say!

I hope to be able to take pictures later today.

There's clay in there? That's weird.
Oh, the soil, you mean? It's clay soil. I remember now.

Yes indeedy. I didn't fully appreciate that fact when I was planning to do this myself.

One thing worries me. I see what looks like an odd end of an irrigation line sticking out and I'm afraid the helper guy forgot to put the line back when they poured in the gravel. This would mean that water would simply pour out under the stones, essentially ruining the entire job. So I'm calling Shaun today to get that straightened up. Whatever needs to be done.
