photo gripe

I stumbled upon this picture through stumbleupon. It is one of so many photographs of women in positions they would never choose to be in if left on their own. Yet the comments: "beautiful", "gorgeous", "nice angle".

I don't recall ever seeing photographs of men in bizarre poses like this.

It's a fantasy and it irritates the hell out of me. In part because photos like this tend to represent women as ethereal creatures, rather like fairies (many even add wings) or angels, unaware of normal human comfort and unattached to the ordinary things. They are always clothed in romantic dress, as if their lot in life is to look beautiful.

I realize it's beautifully photographed. Tough.

Oh come on, judith. You KNOW you're always wrapping yourself in a curtain and laying amongst the jagged rocks of a creek bed.

This reminds me of the gripe (legitimate gripe, mind you) that comic book fans have about how females are always drawn so extreme (jutting breasts, costumes that are far from practical, distorted body size, etc) yet the guys aren't subjected to the same thing. So you find some funny re-workings like: http://strangetwn-god.livejournal.com/39471.html#cutid1

yup
I agree with you 100%.

There's something called "the head tilt" that's discussed in feminist literature. It's about how women tend to and are asked to tilt their heads for photos. This little tilt changes the woman's entire demeanor. It makes them more submissive looking, more delicate, more fragile and thus, more "feminine."

I do it, too.

It's like a soft focus lens. It distorts reality.

Re: yup
I run across photos similar to this on stumbleupon all the time. Sometimes I stop to make a comment that I am sick of these. It's an idealization of Woman, like the time women were put on a pedestal.
